This was a calligraphy piece that was commissioned as a Christmas gift for a friend of the client. The Latin at the top Sancte Thoma Becket oro pro nobis means: "Saint Thomas Becket, pray for us!" On either side of this text are the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The illumination style is inspired by manuscripts made in the International Gothic style (example: www.manhattanrarebooks.com/pic…). The initial "M" has the coat of arms of the city of Canterbury  on it, which is derived from the coat of arms attributed to St. Thomas Becket. Below the initial M is a depiction of St. Thomas Becket framed in a gothic arch. St. Thomas Becket is shown with a red chasuble (red for martyrdom) with his archbishop's pallium as he was the Archbishop of Canterbury. In his left hand he holds the Archiepiscopal cross (the Archbishop's cross with the two cross-bars), and in his left he holds a palm branch (another symbol of martyrdom) and a sword (the instrument of his murder). At the bottom are three scenes from the life of Thomas Becket. Going from left to right, the first one shows Thomas Becket giving alms to the poor, the second shows his ordination and consecration as Archbishop, and the third shows his murder in Canterbury Cathedral. The main text is from the 1964 film Becket (adapted for the screen from the 1959 play by Jean Anouilh). The scene can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=raOkE4… (the prayer starts at about 5:50). Also, I highly recommend watching the movie, it has absolutely superb acting and great dialogue; it's definitely one of my favorites (along with Lion in Winter starring Peter O'Toole again as King Henry II). :D

Wow, that text very well written. Not the sort of thing I would have expected from a film--I'll have to see if I can find it and watch it.

Your art is great, as usual, but the text really makes me think.
