Description

Don Quixote de la Mancha
July 9th 2013
8 x 10 inches
Watercolors and White Ink

I finished this almost a week ago--it's a picture of Don Quixote riding his faithful nag Rocinante alongside his faithful squire Sancho Panza, probably somewhere near the Sierra Morena in Spain. I was commissioned to do a picture of the famous pair by a friend of mine, so now, here it is. I can't say I'm super happy with it, mostly because I don't like how muddy and just generally lacking in clarity my watercolors are, but hey, hopefully I'll get better with practice. I sort of like the mountains in the back there.

And everybody, I'm really, really sorry for my lack of responsiveness this summer. I'm been working a lot these past couple of weeks (which is good), but it also means I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on pictures, or read or write or do much of anything, including replying to all my messages (I'm just sneaking on really quick to upload this, hence the lack of my usual lengthy description). I will get to you eventually, I promise! Thank you everybody for all of the comments and favorites and everything. You all are awesome, and I hope you're having a great summer!

I don't think you should bemoan the "muddiness" of the watercolors, that is somewhat just in their nature. I think this looks wonderful and you have an excellent handle on this medium too. Watercolors are my favorite, I like them for their versatility, ease of use and easy cleanup (the prime reason why I like watercolors just a little better than I like acrylic.) I am actually particularly fond of the way that watercolors lend themselves to more... I don't want to say blurry but.. you know... more dream-like, lets call it. I find them soothing. I also particularly like using muted colors (in all mediums) so watercolors are a good fit for me.

Anyway, I think your landscape here has the desirable dreaminess, but the figures are crisp and easily recognizable. Very good work yet again!
