Sonnet 18 by Theophilia Sonnet 18 by Theophilia
Sonnet XVIII
February 4th 2014
8½ x 11½ inches
Ink and watercolor

Shakespeare’s famous sonnet 18, done in a 14th century gothic style, as a birthday gift for my little sister who turned 19. :aww: I asked her what she wanted for a birthday gift this year, and she couldn't definitively decide between either an illuminated Sonnet 18 or a Tom Hiddleston (as Henry V) pyrography clock. So I chose for her. ;-) She particularly loves Tom Hiddleston's reading of Sonnet 18 (which, I think, is a very good one), and now whenever I read it I read it in his voice, haha. Enjoy!

For those interested, here's a link to Tom Hiddleston reading Sonnet 18: www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6Q_Io…

Background parchment texture used: Plain Brown Paper texture.

Wow, illuminated manuscript! I'm always fascinated by this form of art, especially calligraphy. I did something like this back in the past but never this good. You inspired me that I might do this again. Did you use dip pen for this?

THANK YOU! I think calligraphy/illumination is a lot of fun, you should try it! (especially if you're a control freak life me. Painting just doesn't give me the amount of control I want sometimes). Yep, I think dip pens are the best for this kind of thing. For some reason other kind of calligraphy pens are messy and i always end up getting ink all over my hands. Maybe I just have bad pens though.

Nice! I use dip pens too but for drawing. I will definitely grab some C nibs on my next art store shopping! Do you just use watercolor for colors?

I use some color inks (these, to be precise: www.amazon.com/Winsor-Newton-C… ) but yeah, I color with watercolors.

THANK YOU!! :aww: Yes, he is a very good actor. It's good to see some actors who started with theater (and Shakespeare). I think it really puts them on a whole different level of acting above their peers. And i agree with you there too, Tom Hiddleston (from what I know of him, at any rate) seem like a genuinely really good man. Kind, considerate, humble, and all the rest. It's very refreshing to see. :aww:

Man, this is fantastic. I've really enjoyed seeing the artwork put into old time writing like this, and have searched the internet for a Word compatible program to let me write in this style. Your work here is amazing, and I hope to see more!

For WEEKS I've been trying to remember what the decoration around old writings was called. I knew there was a name for it but couldn't recall. ILLUMINATION! I can now continue with my project/gift!

Awesome piece too. ;)

This is really remarkable! My favorite part is the area where the poet presents it to a woman. Those little people are great! And they fit in so well with the rest of the composition. Really gorgeous detail work, and what a fantastic gift for your sister. :)

What's a pyrography clock?

Hahaha, thank you! They did tend to scrunch in letters didn't they? :XD:

Pyrography is a type of art where one burns things to make art. I've been doing some wood-burning pieces of late, and for Christmas I made a friend of mine a pyrography clock of G.K. Chesterton (one of her favorite authors). You can see a picture of it here: www.deviantart.com/art/Chester…. I use a metal stylus that gets plugged in and heats up until it can burn designs into wood or leather or whatever have you. :)
