"Our Lady of Częstochowa: Queen of Poland" Finished: August 25th, 2009 Pencil, india ink, watercolor pencils
In honor of Our Lady on her Feast Day as Our Lady of Częstochowa, August 26th. In a special way I dedicate this picture to the Polish people and particularly to my Polish friends here on dA. I also wish to dedicate this to ~niuhuru and all of my Polish friends here on dA, and to all of the people of Poland, for your very special love for Our Lady.
Our Lady of Częstochowa is in the Byzantine style of 'Hodegetria' "an iconographic depiction of the Theotokos holding the Child Jesus at her side while pointing to Him as the source of salvation for mankind.[link] "Hodegetria" Greek for "She Who Shows the Way." Mary points away from herself to the Christ Child. Jesus holds the Gospels and blesses the viewer with His right hand.
How the scars on her face occured: "During Ladislaus' time, the image was damaged during a siege, by a Tartar arrow, "inflicting a scar on the throat of the Blessed Virgin." In 1430, Hussites stole and vandalized the precious image, breaking it into three pieces. Adding insult to injury:
One of the robbers drew his sword, struck the image and inflicted two deep gashes. While preparing to inflict a third gash, he fell to the ground and writhed in agony until his death ... The two slashes on the cheek of the Blessed Virgin, together with the previous injury to the throat, have always reappeared - despite repeated attempts to repair them. "[link]
This website has some information on the historical background of Our Lady of Jasna Gora.
Queen of Poland, pray for us!
This is part of my series, Mary, Mother of all Peoples. She is Our Lady of Poland.
I showed this to my family (we're Polish; both my parents and brother were born in Poland). We love Our Lady of Czestochowa, and think this is beautiful. Thank you.
Oh wow! That's awesome! I do wish I had a bit of Polish blood in me (mostly just Irish and German--you know, typical American mutt. ). Thank you! I did do a newer picture of her though: [link]
Thank you!! I want to do another version of this sometime this August (hopefully in time for her feast day) because this on is rather old, and I'm not entirely happy with it. But thank you! God bless!
God Bless!
And I invite you to look at my gallery and my Our Lady of Czestochowa
I'm actually going to do a re-do of this one sooner or later, just because I'm not quite happy with how it looks.
Yours' is lovely! ^^ I especially love the textures in the cloth.
