Nollaig Shona
December 7th 2012
Watercolor and Ink

Ah, pure Celtic exuberance.

I was trying to get this done earlier for a Christmas card this year, but it's probably out a bit too late. And besides, it kind of looks like a mess, which was...eh disappointing to say the least, especially considering how much time I poured into it. This project tied me up for several weeks and I wasn't able to really start on anything else until I had finished this, so I just stayed up until 4 in the morning getting it done. 'Tis done now. Hurrah.

It's supposed to be based on the Lindisfarne Gospel, except I went way too red-dot happy. It looks like it got a bad case of the chicken-pox. :hmm:

Nollaig Shona is Gaelic for "Happy Christmas."

This isn't a mess to me. The red reminds me of iron oxide inks and venerable age. Would make a wonderful Christmas card.

Drat... I guess Celtic is the better word here, huh? 'Cause Gaelic is used more as a noun for the language than it is as an adjective for the art, nowadays... :iconwatersfacepalmplz: Oh, well... :XD:

This is an exquisite illumination worthy of the book of Kells it'self,

It's great to see some Irish stuff, because the people who live here (especially my generation) don't appreciate their own culture. It's depressing really...

If your into Irish religious art look up Harry Clarke (stained glass) and Jim Fitzpatrick (illuminations) ;)

Oh, that's too bad. :( I love Celtic art! (I have yet to meet a person who doesn't).

I checked them out, thank you! Very cool stuff. :D

My mom has the most precious little Irish-themed Christmas ornament with that phrase on it. Took me a minute to remember what it meant though :XD: It's lovely. I adore Celtic illuminations, and one day I might even be patient enough to produce them myself. My favorite part is certainly the star on top, and it's the most charming case of chicken pox I've ever seen. :P

While close up the red dots may seem overdone, if seen from a distance, I think the whole thing is rather attractive.

Great attention to detail.

Awww, well thanks. :) Yeah, my problem is sometimes I'm too focused on the details than on what the piece looks like as a whole.

Hmmm...that's a thought. Do you know how one can make customizable e-cards?

Thank you -- indeed I did, thank God. :aww:

Well, for a simple card, you could just paste the picture into some image-editing software (e.g., Photoshop or Picasa) so that it fits on the left-hand-side of a new blank image. Then, create a text box and write your message on the other half of the page; save it in an email-appropriate file format; attach it to your email message and send. But that's more like the back of a postcard than a proper, 'folded' e-card.

If you have Microsoft Publisher, you could create a side-fold card, and perhaps save it as a PDF, so the receiver could get a 'folded' card even if there isn't a snazzy 'turning the page' feature attached (which probably requires JavaScript or some other kind of programming of which I have no command).

I love how the red dots are dense enough to make a carpet. And the portrait is stunning.

Traditionally, the red dots only surround letters and words, to help them stand out, so you don't miss any more decorative letters. I really like the texture they create here though.

Hahah, that was part of the problems. The red dots do surround the words and letters. :XD: it's just all too packed in that I ought to have been a bit more judicious about all of the red dots. *facepalm*

All those little red dots... :O_o: I did a couple pieces of Celtic calligraphy once (not this intricate) and even I got tired of putting all those red dots in! :faint:

This would be a GREAT Christmas card!

Overall, I think it's really beautiful! Very different, but still very lovely concept and design for a card. Though I can kinda see why the red dots would bother you...though I think they still do work. They kind of give it a whimsical, cheery feel that fits Christmas :)
