This is my Crown of the World pencil WIP. For those of you curious to see how I worked on this ridiculous picture, can see the pencil steps here.

The Finished Picture: The Crown of the World
The Coloring Steps:CotW Coloring WIP
The Godfrey-specific Steps:CotW Godfrey WIP

I.) December 14th, 2009 - This was the first little sketch I did. It probably took all about 20-30minutes. Maybe less. I did it in front of the computer, so not very long. ;-) This is where I started playing around with the basic composition and the expressions, postures, and positions of the characters.

II.) December 22nd, 2009 - Same little piece of printer paper. I started re-hashing all the characters, adding value, switching positions, following up more on the postures and expressions....essentially, making the old one prettier. ;-) I still was not happy with that massive sword in the center. it's just so darn distracting, so I got rid of that in later pictures. I started working more on Baldwin's face, and he stayed essentially the same, as did Joscelin. Sibylla ended up getting changed later, but she looks like a cute little girl in this one. :D The Hashashin and Maryam moved down under Malik and Saladin moved above. At this point the bottom was pretty much set, I just needed to work on the top and the middle. 4 Hours.

III.) January 26th, 2010 - Lots of work on this one. Everyone has essentially stayed in the same position. I decided to replace that trebuchets (LOL) with the wall of Jerusalem, and to connect that with the smoke and clouds in the middle. The crown of thorns was the first part to get drawn in. That took awhile, because knotwork always takes me a good while. ;-) A mini Godfrey was placed in the center with Jerusalem behind (that one took HOURS to draw! I planned out all the city streets first. :XD:). Amalric, Sibylla, Godfrey and Maliks' faces all look a bit funky. Amalrics' got re-done about three or fours times. That crown also got re-drawn several times. Sibylla just was redrawn once. And Godfrey...well, there's a whole WIP for him. ;-) 29 hours for all of that.

IV.) February 10th, 2010 - Did lots of work on the clouds and the shadows, as well as the walls of Jerusalem. Amalric's face got re-done (again). This is where I said I was "finished." LOL. 11 hours.

V.) March 3rd, 2010 - Well, then I decided to be all finicky. ;-) I wasn't 100% happy with everything, so I started changing and erasing more stuff, especially the clouds. I wasn't sure what to do with those because they were way too awkward and obtrusive. Godfrey's face got completely annihilated into a freakishly creepy face. My next goal was to go about changing that. Malik also got a make-over. I don't know how many times I re-did his maille aventail....Sibylla and Amalric are finally completed. Andronicus' face was re-done. 14 Hours

VI.) March 18th, 2010 - Fixed Godfrey's face!!! That was about the whole 18 hours of this. Godfrey in the middle got done, Jacques cloak that kept changing finally settled down. The castle got re-done…again. I forgot how many times I re-drew that castle. At least five.

VII.) April 8th, 2010 - Finally got it all done and down. The shading is just how I want it, I finally figured out how to do the smoke in the Jerusalem panel in a satisfactory way. :aww: Life is good. From the last stage to this stage: 16 hours. All in all, I was most happy with Godfrey's face. I was scared to touch it with ink. :XD:

This is fascinating; the different angle's of Godfrey's head explored early on would have yielded a dramatically different feel to the painting.

I'm amazed at how you got ink on and it wasn't smeary after such a heavy application of pencil.

Thanks!!!!! Yeah, hence why I kept playing around with it so much. It had to be "perfect" (whatever that meant. :XD:) so I felt like I had to keep drawing and erasing until I got something I was happy with. :hmm:

Well, it did get smeary, but for the most part when I was inking (or even just drawing) and my hand was going over a previously inked/drawn on part, I just rested my hand on a sheet of paper.

Ah. It can be so tempting to give up when something goes like that.

I do that too sometimes.

Hahhah, well thank you. :D Well, I only meant "ridiculous" as in that playfully affectionate disparagement of how much time this took. I love this picture too much to think it's actually "ridiculous." XD:

Cool! It's kind of fun to see how it developed over time.
